How to Actually Follow Through with Your Goals

Delaine De Beer

It’s impossible to ignore the fact that people often have trouble following through with their goals, especially those darned New Year's Resolutions. Why is that? In his Forbes article, Brett Steenbarger blames this on a decrease in zeal that accompanies ambitious goals which aren’t broken down into more attainable, bite-sized pieces.

You may have heard this before; it isn’t a new concept. But Brett cites a few interesting sources which have fresh insight on this particular conundrum.

Research tells us that people are most likely to pursue outcomes if they feel in control of the achievement of their desired ends... When people set goals and cannot reach those in a relatively short period of time, their brains kick in and tell them they are no longer in control.

However, when we start to consistently reach much smaller milestones, our reward centers light up which gives us the encouragement we need to keep moving forward.

The bottom line is that we can actually achieve the goals we set by thinking big and acting small. Large aims can inspire us and keep us on a challenging path. Small, achievable goals can reward us and help us sustain the energy to traverse that path.

This is known as the progress principle. And that’s where we come in; BrightPlan will help you to take those looming, life-long goals and give you a real sense of control over them.
