HR Tech 2021: Wellness Takes Center Stage

Rebecca Morris

HR Tech is back and in-person!

The 2021 HR Technology Conference & Expo returned to Las Vegas this year and ran from September 28, 2021 to October 1, 2021. Even with fewer in attendance due to COVID-19, it was great to see the energy from the attendees and vendors that made it out. There was a session-packed agenda with industry thought leaders and distinguished HR leaders helping to shape the future of HR. Here is a rundown of some of the highlights.

Women in HR Technology Summit

Day one kicked off with the Women in HR Tech Summit. Working mothers and caretakers shouldering a large share of household responsibilities throughout the pandemic and more female workers serving in hard-hit sectors, has left women stressed and underrepresented in the workforce. The summit focused on how companies can redefine work, complement their benefits offerings, and implement technology to support female employees.

Josh Bersin shared 10 truths for HR technology

In his keynote address, research analyst Josh Bersin shared 10 truths defining the future of HR technology. Of note, employee experience is at the center of the HR tech market. HR tech vendors are putting users’ needs first and employers are looking for solutions that their employees can immediately use to be more productive and healthy. Employee listening tools have also grown exponentially with the goal of helping HR teams and line managers better understand and respond to employees' needs.

BrightPlan “knocked the socks off” of attendees

The BrightPlan booth was abuzz with demos and exciting giveaways. Visitors were asked how their employees are currently “socking away” money for the future and left with a pair of lively socks.

We also gave away prizes that focused on wellness and included drawings for a Theragun massager and a Whoop subscription, plus free access to BrightPlan for six months.

Ellucian Enables Employees to Thrive

Stacey Magness, Director of Benefits & Operations at Ellucian and Marthin De Beer, BrightPlan Founder & CEO, participated in a presentation and fireside chat on how employers can leverage financial well-being to drive competitive advantage.

Stacey shared how Ellucian prioritized employee experience and five key areas of employee well-being to attract and retain talent: physical, community, social, purpose and financial. In doing so, Ellucian needed a financial wellness solution that was holistic and a partner committed to the success of their benefits program.

Ellucian chose BrightPlan two years ago because it:

  • Ties together Ellucian’s various financial wellness benefits
  • Offers customized financial education
  • Features tailored enrollment and communication
  • Provides access to financial planners
  • Prioritizes a personalized employee experience

Ellucian is able to track the success of the program with insights into overall well-being by gender and other demographic data, further complementing their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The company can also see how many employees have created financial goals as well as increases in average savings per employee, average debt reduction, and other key financial health measures. Overwhelmingly, Ellucian has found employees achieving financial goals that span every life stage—from retirement, emergency savings, debt payoff, and education to home purchases, investing, travel, charitable donations, weddings, and eldercare.

One thing was clear: Wellness took center stage

Wellness is particularly salient right now. Employees want to feel cared for and know that their employer understands their needs both at work and in their personal lives. Wellness solutions that are holistic and address the physical, mental, social, and financial well-being of diverse employee groups are central to that equation.
